Space Dandy General
Space_Dandy_promotional_image.jpg
Recently started watching Space Dandy and I can't believe how well it holds up almost ten years on so I thought I'd make a thread about it.

The anime is about Dandy and his team searching the universe for undiscovered aliens so they can register them and get money to waste at space hooters, usually shit goes sour and some episodes they straight up just die, and that's why it's so great as the writers pretty much were allowed to do whatever the fuck they wanted with majority of the episodes which led to this show being one of most craziest and fun animes out there. It also explores many interesting scientific concepts also, the main one being the infinite universes theory, which explains why our heroes are ok the next episode as the show follows multiple Dandies instead of the same crew episodically, and yes Rick & Morty pretty much did the same concept but Space Dandy does it much better. Oh yeah, it's animated by Studio Bones too, the same guys who worked on Cowboy Bepbop and Fullmetal Alchemist, so you already know the art is going to be good and the general production quality excellent. I'd recommend everyone watch this anime even if you don't like the medium much as the show is worth the effort going through.

Oh I love the music in the show too:

I love space dandy, if you can, check every animator who made a storyboard for the anime, Shingo Natsume(the director) made the storyboard for the first and last episode. here you can see each one if you ctrl+f "storyboard" everyone is pretty much a veteran with many years on their back. Rewatching the series and looking at the artsyle difference on each episode definitely adds so much to the viewing experience.

Sweet I will, great to see another fan of the show on here as people just do not talk about this anime enough these days.

Space Dandy's great. Are there any other anime who intentionally go through a shitload of different directors and animators, and end up having very different-feeling episodes as a result?

Not a direct answer to your question, but if you like the art style of Space Dandy, you'd probably like the movie Redline.

I've never seen it, I gotta I take it?
It's really cool with super detailed and fluid animation, and the pacing is lightning fast, but the direction is really bad in my opinion. You'll often get these very quick zoomed-in shots that make it hard to understand what's going on (the dark art style does not help either).
There are two major races: Yellow Line (right at the start) and the big one Red Line at the end. Because of that bad direction the Red Line race in particular is really hard to follow.

But it's short and as I said really quick with the pacing, so it's really easy to just watch in one go.

>never noticed that we had a space dandy thread up
Space Dandy is the digital manifestation of the Hyperborean Aryan spirit. Watched it live when I was younger, probably rewatched the entire series like five or six times by now. I spit on the man who cannot get lost in the whimsical joy of Dandy. Gonna drop a few of kino scenes. Wish there were more clips up on youtube, because this stuff hardly scratches the surface.

I saw it first when I was like 14 and man was it fresh, watched it again several times since. It's so odd though as despite the praises it got at the time these days no one really remembers at all. Real shame as if pieces like Space Dandy got more of the attention they deserve there would be more like it than the constant stream of life of life rubbish we get now. More people need to watch it as it is an obscure gem.

its the new age of anime watchers and weebs not bothering to watch the old goodies, or not even knowing about them at all. if i am a new to anime, i will go to youtube and search up "anime recommendations" and it will show off every generic animetuber with the basic MHA, OPM, Demon Slayer, DragonBall, and etc. it also doesnt help that these mainstream anitubers take money from crunchyroll, sony, and whatever anime deals they have to promote the newest stuff on the block.

it is sad to see though, since there is a lot of old stuff that i have found through recommendation charts that are really good shows. gunbuster, outlaw star, uresei yatsura (the 1981 version, havent seen the new reanimated one, dont know if its good or not tbh) afro samurai and countless other shows.

Many "new weebs" are watching anime for softcore porn and waifus. It became a simping / coping medium. Where main male prot. is often literal loser / shut in so male audience can relate to him he's just like me fr fr

ah yes the generic male self insert manga/anime with little to no redeeming traits, no personality, nothing to make him stand out, nothing exciting about the character whatsoever goes to another world with ULTRA GOD XHING ZI PING LO HIGH WANG CRUCIBLE POWERS THAT ONLY HE HAS AND ALSO HE HAS BEEN AGED DOWN TO THE age range of 12-16 but not above it god forbid an actual adult protagonist and DOMINATES ALL AND GETS ALL THE WOMENS shit.

yeah, i'll just stick to my seinens and delinquent mangas.

Its mostly an honest to god lack of talented writers back in Japan. At the end of the day Americans only make up a small portion of total revenue for the anime companies back in Japan, and even if they did make a larger margin off us they wouldn't admit it. So they cater to the Japanese market almost exclusively. They've got this weird cultural thing about entertainment where it NEEDS to be cheery constantly if its meant for the broader public, in turn giving us the constant shit pile of feel good slice of life shows and other slop. Not many of them are willing to step out of that cultural shadow and make some proper kino, but it happens occasionally.

100% this, really nailed it on the head here. Sadly your average Japanese otaku's taste is shit and they are more likely to invest time and money into nerd wish fulfillment nonsense than more carefully crafted and well-thought out stories (that are also harder to churn out on average) hence you see endless Komi-sans and Konosubas being made. This is why I don't like animes with too many female central characters neither, not because I'm a misogynist or hate women, but because the author ends up focusing way too much on them than the plot and it just turns into a fanservice fest with no interesting story or even end in site. Not saying all fanservice leads to a bad anime and even Space Dandy has it aka Honey who is the central fanservice, but she is not entirely central to the plot and actually has more to her than being the hot busty booby girl for weebs to droll over.

The above is why I feel when anime which aren't like this come along it does shake the ground a bit as it does show what a lot more anime could be if these authors could start thinking with their dick less and risk avoiding the wish fulfilment norm.

this is the reason as to why anything that isnt the generic slice of life, isekai garbage, or whatever trend of the year shit anime/manga comes out, people go fucking ballistic over it.

just how bad is the scene where the basic modicums of mediocrity are held to such high regards
