In the original story, they were simply trying to survive, constantly evading monsters that hunted them 24/7, while scavenging just to make it through each day.
They were lovers. (That was before I changed them to twins trapped in the void because, my high school chud-incel brain couldn’t write a lover couple. Later, I made them adoptive siblings.)
